Growing up in a world that only knows gender to be male or female, I learned about intersex a little over a decade ago when my country was enacting a law that bans genital surgeries on minors. Since then, I realized that while a law is a step in the right direction, however, it is not enough to change the perception of society that humans must fit neatly within the standards of sex and gender that they have set for themselves. One person cannot undo the harm that was perpetuated in the past, or prevent other people from suffering through the pain and torture they themselves had to endure, but Pidgeon Pagonis is certainly trying their best. Their memoir 'Nobody Needs to Know' is as much a personal account as it is a battle cry. Their skillful writing, mixing wit and vulnerability, forces readers to question their ingrained understanding of sex, challenges gender norms, and urges society to appreciate the diversity of human experience. Pagonis' unique voice sheds a light on the importance of bodily autonomy, identity, and the lived realities of intersex individuals who, for many years were made to feel ashamed simply for being born the way they were. They have successfully added a vital contribution to the ongoing conversation about gender and this is why I highly recommend this memoir to anyone who wants to know more.

This book was hard to put down - I was gripped. Pidgeon writes with such honesty and vulnerability — so much deep emotion and self-reflection is shared so beautifully throughout. I learned a ton and felt grateful for their willingness to let the world in on the evolution of their journey. I feel like I can hopefully be a better advocate and ally thanks to Pidgeon’s amazing story. If the case for bodily autonomy wasn’t clear to you before, no doubt it will be after you read this.

The abuse has to end, children need to be allowed to be. Your voice is a beam of light in this forever feeling night. Thank you Pidgeon.
